3 pro golfers who have been suspended for betting ft. Marco Penge
Over the years, in sports such as golf, people often make bets on the players. However, even some players are also involved in betting. Recently, the DP World Tour suspended Marco Penge for betting on the game. However, he is not the only one.
Reports claimed that Phil Mickelson and John Daly have also been involved in betting in the past and lost millions in gambling. Last year, two of the Korn Ferry Tour players were suspended for betting. Here are three players who were suspended for betting in golf.
Three pro golfers who have been suspended for betting
#1 Marco Penge
Marco Penge has recently been suspended for betting on the sport. The English golfer was handed a three-month ban from the DP World Tour along with a one-month suspension from playing on the circuit. He will be away from the game until February 2025. He was suspended for betting on multiple golf events.
The circuit clarified that Penge had not placed bets on tournaments he played in. Nonetheless, he had violated the Tour's integrity program, which eventually led to his suspension.
Along with the suspension, Penge was charged with a £2,000 fine. He later released a statement to clarify his stance on betting. Taking to his social media account, the 26-year-old wrote:
"I genuinely thought it was ok to bet on golf as long as it wasn't on myself or tournaments I was competing in. After I had found out that I had breached the rules and revisited the integrity policy at greater depth, it was only then that I realised this wasn't the case. This was all a genuine and honest mistake that I have taken full responsibility for and I will never ever make the same mistake again."
Marco Penge’s suspension will be effective from December 13, 2024, to February 13, 2025. He is likely to return to action at the Magical Kenya Open, which will take place from February 20 to 23.
#2 Vince India
In 2023, Vince India was suspended from playing on the PGA Tour-co-sanctioned events for reportedly betting on the game. He was given a six-month suspension from September 28, 2023, to March 17, 2024. He had allegedly bet on the PGA Tour-sanctioned events but not on the tournaments he participated in.
#3 Jake Staiano
Jack Staiano is another Korn Ferry Tour player who was suspended for reportedly betting on the game. He was suspended for three months, from September 11, 2023, to December 10, 2023. He was also found guilty of violating the Tour's integrity program and earned a suspension for three months.
