5 golfers who must perform well at the Wyndham Championship to make the FedEx Cup playoffs
The Wyndham Championship concludes the PGA Tour's regular season and gives way to the FedEx Cup playoffs. As a result, it is the last chance for many players to break into the coveted top 70.
It is no coincidence that many of the current qualified players are in the Wyndham Championship field. They will be looking for a good performance to solidify their position and perhaps even move up the leaderboard.
The same can be said for some players who are currently outside the top 70 but could make the cut at the last minute with a good performance at the Wyndham Championship.
Let's take a look at some of those players:
5 golfers who must perform well at the Wyndham Championship
Among the players who need to perform well at the Wyndham Championship are some big names, including Major champions. Here are 5 golfers who must perform well at the tournament:
#1 Jordan Spieth
The three-time Major champion currently qualifies for the FedEx Cup playoffs as he is ranked 63rd in the world. This is thanks to three top 10s in 20 tournaments played during the season (13 cuts made).
However, Jordan Spieth is only 114 points over the cut line, so he is in danger of being ousted. He needs to at least make the cut at the Wyndham Championship to earn enough points to secure a spot in the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
#2 Lucas Glover
The 2009 US Open champion arrives at Sedgefield Country Club, home of the Wyndham Championship, in a similar situation to last season. In 2023, Lucas Glover won the event to sneak into the playoffs on the final stroke.
Glover currently sits 76th in the FedEx Cup standings but is only 72 points below the cut line. A good performance at the event would give him a playoff pass, although it also depends on how his direct rivals perform.
#3 Nick Dunlap
Dunlap has won two PGA Tour events this season and is tied for 66th in the FedEx Cup standings. The rookie has missed the cut seven times in 19 starts and has just one top-10 finish apart from his wins.
Nick Dunlap is only 33 points over the cut line, so he will also need a good performance at Sedgefield to secure his place in the top 70.
#4 Nicolai Hojgaard
The Dane sits 80th on the FedEx Cup leaderboard, 136 points below the cut line. It is the result of a season with just one top-10 finish (2nd at the Farmers Insurance Open) and 12 missed cuts in 17 tournaments.
However, Nicolai Hojgaard is coming off a 7th-place finish at the Paris 2024 Olympic Golf Event, including a record round of 62. If he can capitalize on that momentum with a strong finish at Sedgefield, he has a chance to make the playoffs.
#5 Davis Riley
Davis Riley returned to the PGA Tour winner's circle in 2024 by winning the Charles Schwab Challenge. However, that was not enough to get him into the top 70 as he missed 10 cuts in the 21 events he played.
Nevertheless, Riley currently sits in 72nd place, just 38 points off the cut line. A strong showing in the final event of the season will virtually guarantee him a playoff spot.
