How many LIV Golfers made it to 2023 U.S. Open?
There are 11 golfers who currently play on the LIV Golf Tour that have qualified for the U.S. Open. The event will take place June 15th-18th at the North Course of The Los Angeles Country Club. The number was finalized after the results of the recently completed PGA Championship were made official.
At the East Course of Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York, Patrick Reed, Abraham Ancer, Thomas Pieters, Joaquin Niemann and Mito Pereira qualified. The golfers met the requirements after ranking in the Top-60 of the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR).
Reed, winner of nine PGA Tour tournaments, including a major (2018 Augusta Masters), finished T18 at the PGA Championship. His score moved him to 44th in the OWGR. Another golfer who did well in Rochester was Mito Pereira, who tied with Reed at T18 and placed 50th in the OWGR.
Pieters finished T40 at the PGA Championship, which gave him the necessary points to take 53rd place on the world list. Finally, Niemann and Ancer missed the cut at Oak Hill, but it was enough to place them 30th and 46th, respectivly.
Although there is still one more update from the OWGR next Monday to make the U.S. Open rankings official, the forecast is that the changes will not be too drastic. In other words, Reed, Ancer, Pieters and Pereira can check their tickets to Los Angeles.
LIV golfers already qualified for the U.S. Open
Brooks Koepka, Martin Kaymer, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Cameron Smith and Phil Mickelson have already qualified months (and years) in advance.
Koepka, the bright and shiny five-time majors champion, has his place in Los Angeles not only for having won the PGA Championship this season, but for having done it three times in the last five years (2018-19). Being U.S. Open champion in 2017 and 2018 also qualifies him.
Martin Kaymer won the 2014 edition of the U.S. Open. According to the qualifying rules, is entitled to a place in the field. The same goes for Dustin Johnson, winner in 2016 and Bryson DeChambeau (2020).
Cameron Smith has the doors open to the Los Angeles Country Club due to his victory in the 2022 Open Championship. Phil Mickelson, meanwhile, is in the same situation, due to his triumph in the 2021 PGA Championship.
There is no doubt that the LIV Tour will be well represented at the U.S. Open. Their 10 golfers accumulate a combined 105 victories on the PGA Tour, 22 of them in major tournaments. In addition, there are other victories in international tournaments and in other circuits, including the LIV Golf Tour itself. They will surely be giving a lot to talk about in Los Angeles.
