"I'm going to go on a tear” – Phil Mickelson predicts himself to finish low at Masters
Phil Mickelson is having a good time at the 2023 Masters. The LIV golfer sat comfortably at T10 on Friday after posting a second-round 69. Opening up about his good run at the Augusta National, Lefty said confidently that he was “ready to go on a tear”.
On Thursday, the LIV Golf player played the opening round of 71. However, he leveled up his game on Friday and was seemingly pumped. Having played one of his finest rounds in recent times, Mickelson came out to state that he was excited to score well and was ready to go low on Sunday.
Speaking to the media after Day 2, Phil Mickelson said, as quoted by Golf Monthly:
“I'm going to go on a tear pretty soon. You wouldn't think it. You look at the scores. But I've been playing exactly how I played yesterday, hitting the ball great, turning 65s, 66s into 77s. I'm ready to go on a tear. I don't know why I'm playing well - actually, I do. I've been putting in the work. One of my [LIV Golf] teammates, Brendan Steele, has been helping me with the driver.”
He added:
"I've been able to talk to some of my guys, like [Cameron] Tringale is one of the best putters in the game. I've been talking to him about putting. I'm putting great. I've actually been driving the ball great coming in here. Drove it pretty well yesterday. Steely has been helpful with that. So I'm close to going on a tear."
Mickelson holds the record for being the oldest Major winner. Lefty won the 2021 PGA Championship at 50. This was just months ahead of his controversial move to the Saudi-backed series. Despite having a dull season at LIV, Mickelson currently looks at home at Augusta.
Stressing on his game, Mickelson said:
"I scored really well today. I actually did not hit it anywhere near as well as I did yesterday. But I scored well. I got it up and down, made a lot of good putts. I'm actually looking forward to the weekend. I know I've been hitting it, playing better than I've been scoring, and I'm looking forward to just putting one round together that I know I'm capable of, and if I do that, it's going to be a really fun weekend."
Phil Mickelson missed playing at the Augusta Masters
It's safe to state that Phil Mickelson seems unaffected by the chat around LIV Golf coming into the 2023 Masters. The Saudi-backed Tour golfer is currently playing like he missed the Augusta greens.
Lauding Augusta National, the 2010 Masters winner said:
"I would use the word more spiritual. If you love golf, when you come here, it's more of a spiritual experience, where you feel this appreciation for this great game and the gratitude that you have. Then this tournament, this course gives something for everybody to aspire to.”
It is pertinent to note that Mickelson sat out of last year’s Masters following his controversial remarks on the PGA Tour.
