Icher leads as high winds suspend ANA Inspiration

Frenchwoman Karine Icher

Karine Icher earned a one-stroke lead before the opening round of the ANA Inspiration was suspended due to high winds.

Frenchwoman Icher carded a five-under-par 67 to hit the front at the first major of the year on the LPGA Tour on Thursday.

The 38-year-old - playing in the morning group - holed seven birdies and two bogeys before officials called an end to play at 16:00 (local time) in Rancho Mirage, California with almost half the field yet to complete their rounds.

Michelle Wie, Ryu So-yeon, Park Sung-hyun and amateur Eun Jeong Seong are a shot adrift of Icher, who is yet to win on the LPGA Tour after joining in 2003.

"I'm probably the player with the most top 10s without winning, so I'm used to it," Icher told the media. "I'm going to keep focused and keep my game on and try to sink some putts, and we'll see from there."

Lexi Thompson and Jenny Shin are three under heading into Friday, while Simin Feng, Jang Ha-na, Paula Creamer, Haru Nomura, Anna Nordqvist and Candie King are among a group of 16 players tie for eighth at two under.

Meanwhile, 14-year-old amateur Lucy Li is a shot further back.
