Indians in focus at the US Open: Anirban Lahiri and Shiv Kapur
For the first time in the history of the US Open, two Indian golfers Anirban Lahiri and Shiv Kapur will tee off come Thursday.
Lahiri, who won the Malaysian Open and the Indian Open earlier this year has been paired with American Ryan Moore and Erik Compton in the first two rounds. Lahiri finished a tied 49th at the Masters this year.
The 27-year-old currently leads the Asian Tour Order of Merit, qualified for the US Open courtesy his top-60 position in the golf rankings.
Kapur, who is ranked 338 in the world made it to the major after finishing second at the International sectional qualifiers in Surrey.Denny McCarthy and D.A Points will accompany Kapur. The 33-year-old will have fond memories of the US Open after registering a best performance by an Indian at a major – a tied 23rd at Pinehurst last year.
The other Indian pairs to have played at majors include:
Jyoti Randhawa and Arjun Atwal – 2004 British Open.
Jyoti Randhawa and Jeev Milkha Singh – 2008 PGA Championship.
Jeev Milkha Singh and Anirban Lahiri – 2012 British Open.
Lahiri, Atwal and Randhawa have featured in five Majors so far. Jeev leads the list with 13 Major appearances. Lahiri is also the third Indian to compete in all four Majors after Jeev and Atwal.
