John Daly provides crucial update on knee injury after withdrawing from The Open Championship

The Open Championship 2024 was John Daly's 26th time playing the event. Daly came into the tournament after finishing T56 in the recently concluded Kaulig Companies Championship on the PGA Champions Tour. Fans of Daly were excited to see him play at the Royal Troon.

However, after the end of Round 1, the 58-year-old golfer had to withdraw from the tournament due to injury. Later, on social media platform X (fka Twitter), Daly shared an update and spoke about his injury. In his post, he also expressed gratitude towards his fans.

Daly, who shot 82 in the first round wrote:

"Disappointed on missing out @TheOpen b/c of a knee injury. watching from afar isn't the same, but know I tried my heart out to get thru it. Was at physio this morning and made the decision to ice & rest it! Thk u to all my fans and @RandA for a week @RoyalTroonGC #IliotibialBandSyndrome"

After posting this tweet, John Daly received several encouraging messages and comments from his fans. Daly came into The Open Championship after a busy year in which he played 12 events excluding The Open. Earlier this year, Daly had also withdrawn from The PGA Championship due to a knee injury.

Ernie Els also withdrew from The Open Championship 2024

John Daly was not the only big name to withdraw from The Open Championship 2024. South African professional golfer Ernie Els also withdrew from the tournament at the Royal Troon Golf Club. The reason behind Els' withdrawal from the event was a back injury.

In Round 1 of The Open 2024, Els seemed to struggle on the golf course. After the conclusion of play on Thursday, Els had carded an 11-over-par 82. While Els was never a favorite to win the 2024 edition of the Major, fans were excited to see him play due to his decent run of form in recent times.

This year, Ernie Els had several positive results on THE PGA Tour Champions. In May-June, Els won back-to-back events on the tour. While he won The Principal Charity Classic which began on the last day of May, he also won the American Family Insurance Championship which was conducted immediately.

While these victories were massive, fans were mainly excited to see Ernie Els at The Open Championship because he also won the last event he played on The PGA Tour Champions. In his last event on that tour, Els won the Kaulig Companies Championship and carded a score of 70-68-64-68.

Due to this, many were excited to see how Ernie Els would do at The Open Championship. Unfortunately, though, his campaign at The Open ended due to injury.
