Jon Rahm sends Golf Twitter into meltdown by securing TIO relief at Genesis Invitational
Spanish golfer Jon Rahm has instigated a social media furor after his recent TIO relief at the Genesis Invitational.
This came after Xander Schauffele was awarded a free drop despite his ball being up against a tree at the recently concluded WM Phoenix Open. And there is nothing more watchful golf fans love to debate than players taking advantage of rules and being granted them.
Jon Rahm has found himself in the middle of a heated discussion on Twitter after he received TIO (temporary immovable obstruction) relief at the par-4 third at the Genesis Invitational.
His ball came to rest in a fenced-in area that some mistook for a parking lot, which it was not. It was more of a staging area for equipment, also known as a TIO.
The most common TIOs are grandstands and tents, but this was neither. The shot was so bad that Rahm hit a provisional, even though he was almost sure it was a TIO, from which he would be granted free relief.
Rahm spoke about it, saying:
"I was 99.9 percent sure it was TIO. But take advantage of the rules and hit a provisional at least. If I hit it good I have a different visual in mind going through the round. And that .9 percent is just in case. I don't want to be walking back up to the tee and if I can, just saving time as well."
What does Golf Twitter have to say about Jon Rahm's TIO relief?
Golf Twitter had much to say about Jon Rahm being granted TIO relief at the Genesis Invitational.
A fan couldn't believe what had just happened.
Others did not agree with the decision.
Many wondered why the shot wasn't marked OB (out of bounds).
Other fans commented that Rahm was the luckiest player on tour.
Indeed, the Spaniard has found himself in choppy waters on social media.
