World number one Rory McIlroy found himself discussing Christmas presents instead of his game at a news conference on Thursday when his tennis star girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki demanded a special gift.

Wozniacki, 22, put her Northern Ireland boyfriend firmly on the spot as he talked reporters through his first round at the $8 million DP World Tour Championship where he was one shot off the lead.

“You obviously have unbelievable support this week. So, you know if you win this week, am I going to get a really nice Christmas present, and what am I going to get?,” said Wozniacki, reported the Gulf News.

“Have you not already got a lot of nice presents?” replied McIlroy. “I have been looking. But yeah, I don’t think winning this week will lead to me buying you a nice present. I think you’ll get a nice present anyway.”

The news conference had reporters in fits of laughter as the two stars stepped up their light-hearted exchange.

Wozniacki hit back: “Well, that must be because I’m an unbelievable cheerleader.”

“You’re a better tennis player,” joked McIlroy.

“That’s not nice,” replied former world number one Wozniacki.

McIlroy insisted: “No, it is. Anything else?”

“That’s it for today,” said Wozniacki.
