The BMW Championship is the successor to the Western Open, which was played between 1899 and 2006. The event was played primarily on courses in Illinois, although it also visited Colorado, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Ohio and other states.
The legendary Walter Hagen won the event five times. Tiger Woods has won the same number, but three times on the Western Open stage and twice on the next stage.
The aggregate and par records for the Western Open (21-under 267) were set by Scott Hoch in 2001. Two years later, Tiger Woods equalled them.
At the BMW Championship stage, the aggregate record was set by Justin Rose and Keegan Bradley in 2018 (260). The record for par was set by Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Cantlay in 2021 (27 under).
