2024 Presidents Cup Day 3 recap: Team USA take a 4-point lead into the final day
Day three of the 2024 Presidents Cup occurred on Saturday, 28 September at the Royal Montreal Golf Club. Team USA bounced back from the previous day's defeat to win the four-ball and foursomes sessions.
Four four-ball matches were played in the morning, but the International team could only win one. Si Woo Kim and Tom Kim defeated Keegan Bradley and Wyndham Clark 4&3 in 15 holes in a match where the Americans were always behind on the scoreboard.
The other three matches went to Team USA. Scottie Scheffler and Collin Morikawa led the way, beating Adam Smith and Taylor Pendrith 2&1 in 17 holes. It was a hard-fought match with both teams having chances to win.
The Americans won the second hole, but the Internationals responded by winning the third. The match was level for the next eight holes until the Americans won the 12th to take the lead.
However, the Internationals won the 14th to level the match again. It was eventually won by the Americans on the 16th and 17th holes.
Tony Finau and Xander Schauffele took on Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes in the second four-balls of the 2024 Presidents Cup.
The match started very evenly, with the first five holes level, but the Americans took the lead after the sixth hole and never looked back, defeating the Internationals 3&2 in 16 holes.
Finally, Patrick Cantlay and Sam Burns came from a hole down to defeat Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im. The Internationals took the lead with a win on the 2nd hole, but the Americans responded by winning the 4th and taking the lead on the 6th.
Matsuyama and Im leveled the match by winning the 10th, but the Americans regained the lead on the next hole. From then on, they never lost control of the match.
2024 Presidents Cup: Saturday afternoon foursomes
Scottie Scheffler was once again sent out to open foursomes for the American team, this time with Russell Henley. The Americans came up against Sungae Im and Hideki Matsuyama and sensationally beat them by winning three consecutive holes on the back nine.
The Internationals led the match for 11 holes. However, Scheffler and Henley leveled on the 12th and then won on 14, 15 and 16 to claim a stunning 3&2 victory.
Brian Harman and Max Homa lost again in foursomes, this time to Adam Scott and Taylor Pendrith 2 up. Scott extended to 23 his record points tally for an international player in the Presidents Cup.
Collin Morikawa and Sam Burns were trailing on the scoreboard until the 5th hole, but drew level on the 6th and took the lead on the 7th, which they never relinquished. They eventually beat Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes 1 up.
Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele closed the second foursomes session of the 2024 Presidents Cup by beating Si Woo Kim and Tom Kim 1 up. It was a closely contested match that was decided by a 17-foot putt for birdie by Cantlay on the 18th hole.
