2024 Presidents Cup qualifying criteria announced - Key points explored
The Presidents Cup qualifications were just announced for 2024. The tournament is similar to the Ryder Cup but is not as old and has a few different things. This includes its own set of qualifications that can change from year to year. They just announced the 2024 criteria, and there are a few things of note.
The biggest thing to note is that LIV Golf members cannot play. The only players who are allowed to make the Presidents Cup are those who can play PGA Tour sanctioned events, and LIV players can't do that.
LIV players can play Majors, but those are different. They can play in the Ryder Cup because it has far less strict rules for qualifying, but they can't play the Presidents Cup.
This means that Brooks Koepka and others (Koepka made the Ryder Cup and is one of the only well-ranked LIV players right now) would not be able to play. Some of them have played in this international tournament before, but they won't be able to do so under the current criteria.
Qualifying criteria for Presidents Cup
Just like the Ryder Cup, there will be six automatic qualifiers and six captain's selections. Mike Weir is the international captain. For the qualifiers and selections, there are rigid qualifications.
OWGR, which does not grant points to LIV Golfers, will be used to determine the qualifying players for the Cup. The top six Americans and top six international players via OWGR will be named to the team automatically. They'll be named after the conclusion of the 2024 BMW Championship, one of the PGA Tour playoff events.
From September 12, 2022 through that event, players who qualify must have competed in 15 OWGR events. This means anything from the Wyndham Championship to the US Open.
Captain's picks, however, do not have to adhere to this. If they played nine OWGR events, they could still be chosen. This opens the door for someone like Tiger Woods, who won't get 15 events in a year.
Right now, Scottie Scheffler, Max Homa, Wyndham Clark, Collin Morikawa, Patrick Cantlay and Eric Cole would qualify for the American team at the 2024 Presidents Cup. But, this is obviously subject to change quite a bit.
The international team would be filled by Tom Kim, Jason Day, Sungjae Im, Ryan Fox, Corey Conners and Emiliano Grillo. The next Presidents Cup is scheduled for Tuesday, September 24, 2024 through Sunday, September 29, 2024.
The Presidents Cup is a little harder to make than the Ryder Cup. The Ryder Cup has its own set of points, which means there's not as much competition for those spots. It's also over a longer period of time.
Furthermore, anyone can be selected for a captain's choice in the Ryder Cup, which is not the case with the Presidents Cup. Regardless, both are very similar and are among the best international competitions in this sport.
