A look at the history of the Rocket Mortgage Classic
The Rocket Mortgage Classic is a young event on the PGA Tour schedule. It was inaugurated in 2019, as a replacement for the Quicken Loans National, a tournament that was played for a decade, mostly in the Washington DC area.
Despite its young age, the event has always attracted top players. In addition to Fowler (2023), the list of champions includes Nate Lshley (2019), Bryson DeChambeau (2020), Cameron Smith (2021) and Tony Finau (2022).
The event has also been the stage for rising stars to showcase their talent. One example is that among the players who have finished second are Matthew Wolf (2020) and Joaquin Niemann (2021).
The tournament record is 26 under 262, set by Tony Finau when he won in 2022.
The tournament is played every year at the Detroit Golf Club, founded in 1899. The club has two courses (North and South), both designed by famed architect Donald Ross.
The Detroit Golf Club's South Course is home to the Rocket Mortgage Classic. It is a 6,936-yard, par 72 course with a 73.6 rating.
The field of the 2024 edition is led by Tom Kim, ranked 16th in the world ranking. The Korean is coming from finishing second in the Travelers Championship, where another of the players present in Detroit, Cameron Young, also had a great performance.
The Detroit Golf Club will also be the stage for the debut of 15-year-old Miles Russell, who a few weeks ago dazzled with a top 20 finish at the Korn Ferry Tour.
