Charles Howell III wins the LIV Golf opener at Mayakoba
Charles Howell III secured his first professional victory in over four years by winning the LIV Golf Invitational in Mayakoba, Mexico, with an impressive score of 8-under 63. He won the title by a comfortable 4-stroke margin, and this marks his maiden win on the Saudi-funded Tour.
Howell surged ahead to take the lead at El Camaleon by scoring seven birdies in the first 10 holes. Peter Uihlein, on the other hand, struggled on the 12th, hitting three tee shots and ultimately carding a triple bogey. The setback proved costly for Uihlein as Howell established a comfortable lead and eventually clinched the victory. Uihlein finished the round with a score of 68 to settle for second position.
Howell received $4 million for the win. His team, The Crushers GC, also won the team event, which got him an additional $1 million. Uihlein received $2,125,000 for the runner-up position.
The Crushers GC, led by Bryson DeChambeau, defeated the 4 Aces by a nine-stroke margin. The team concluded the event in 26-under, claiming its first win in LIV Golf after getting very close a few times last year.
Alongside DeChambeau and Howell III, The Crushers GC's squad consists of Anirban Lahiri and Paul Casey.
