3 big storylines to follow at the 2024 LIV Golf Chicago ft. Jon Rahm’s title fight
The 2024 LIV Golf Chicago is the second last event of the LIV schedule and the final Individual Championship of the season. The 13 LIV teams will head to Bolingbrook Golf Club for the event from September 13 to 15.
There is a lot at stake for the players and the teams this week as the fight for the season-long Individual title will take place. Besides that, a race for third place in the individual standings will be determined.
Also, the teams at the bottom of the standings after the event will be relegated from the league. The LIV Golf Chicago will be an important event with these three storylines.
The LIV Golf Chicago week will have three big storylines
Individual title fight: Jon Rahm vs Joaquin Niemann
Jon Rahm and Joaquin Niemann are the top contenders to win the Individual Championship title. Rahm leads the individual standings with 195.17 and Niemann is in second place with 192.20. The difference is 2.97 points, which means if Rahm finishes better or equal to Niemann, he's guaranteed the Individual title.
For Niemann to claim the title, his final points on the LIV points list should be three more than Rahm’s following the event.
Niemann joined an interview to discuss how Rahm played excellently throughout the season, saying that to surpass Rahm at the LIV Golf Chicago, he needs to bring his A-game. He said (via LIV Golf):
“He's been playing great lately, so he's probably going to keep doing the same. I've got to try to bring my A-game.”
Race for the third place in individual standings
This is the final chance to be on the top three of the LIV Individual player list. The top contender for third place is Tyrell Hatton of Legion XIII, who has 143.49 points.
Four golfers have a chance to catch up to Hatton. These golfers are Sergio Garcia (with 133.49 points – 8 points behind Hatton), Louis Oosthuizen (129.10 points – 14.39 points behind), Cameron Smith (127.66 – 15.83 behind), and Brooks Koepka (126.73 – 16.73).
Hatton is guaranteed a third place unless either of these four golfers wins the LIV Golf Chicago.
Drop zone relegation
The golfers ranked 49th or below after the event will finish in the drop zone and face relegation out of the league unless they make it back through the LIV Golf Promotions event. There are nine, including Bubba Watson, Scott Vincent, Anthony Kim, and Ben Campbell.
These golfers only have the LIV Golf Chicago to stay in the league. Otherwise, they'll have to wait for the LIV Golf Promotions event.
