The first day of the LIV Golf Team Championship witnessed several upsets as five teams advanced to the semifinals. Low-ranked teams like Iron Heads GC and HyFlyers GC shocked Smash GC and Torque GC to secure historic wins.

On Friday, September 20, the five quarterfinals of the LIV Golf Team Championship took place. Each match featured two singles and one foursome match, with the team winning at least two advancing to the next round.

1) Talor Gooch

Talor Gooch was up against Danny Lee of Iron Heads GC. Lee won the first three holes, but Gooch made a comeback by winning two. However, Gooch won just three holes overall and lost to Lee 1-up.

Overall, Gooch's team, Smash GC, lost to Iron Heads 2-1 and exited the Team Championship.


2) Joaquin Niemann

While Joaquin Niemann won his game against Andy Ogletree, his teammates failed to win the next two matches and bowed out of the tournament early.


3) Lee Westwood

Lee Westwood and his teammates at Majesticks GC failed to bring their best on Friday, as the team lost 3-0 to Fireballs GC. Eugenio Chacarra of Fireballs defeated Henrik Stenson in an extra hole. Poulter lost to David Puig 3 & 2 in the second singles.

In the foursomes, Westwood and Sam Horsfield faced a 2 & 1 defeat against Sergio Garcia and Abraham Ancer.


4) Adrian Meronk

Adrian Meronk was playing his first Team Championship match but had to bow out early after losing to Branden Grace in the 19th hole. His team, Cleeks GC, failed to win any games against Stinger GC.


5) Dustin Johnson

While Dustin Johnson's 4Aces GC qualified for the semifinals, the captain had to face a loss against Peter Uihilein.

Uihlein maintained his winning streak in LIV Golf match play as he won his fourth match, beating his former captain 3&1. He took the early lead by sinking four birdies and an eagle in the first six-hole stretch of one eagle and four birdies against his former captain.
