$70,000,000 Ex-One Direction star invests in Tiger Woods' TGL Boston team
Tiger Woods' TGL league just got another huge investor in Niall Horan. The former One Direction band member and solo artist, who is worth $70 million (according to Celebrity Net Worth), has officially become an investor in the Boston-area team.
TGL's Boston Common Golf team is also owned by Fenway Sports Group, the ownership behind the Boston Red Sox, Liverpool FC, Pittsburgh Penguins, and RFK Racing.
Horan has been seen on the golf course pretty often and said in a statement that it's a passion of his. He said (via TGL):
“Golf has been a lifelong passion of mine and I’m thrilled to be part of this exciting new venture alongside my investment group Greenbridge Ventures in partnership with Fenway Sports Group and Rory, who has been a longtime friend."
The Heaven singer will also serve as an ambassador for Boston Common Golf, the team that features McIlroy, Keegan Bradley, and Adam Scott. Rory McIlroy is the other chief backer for TGL aside from Woods and is a friend of the singer.
Horan also added that he's excited to see the team format in a unique setting that combines technological play with a sport always played on grass:
"Being able to combine my love for the game and my friendship with Rory into a relationship that helps launch a new concept in golf is truly special. It’s a fantastic opportunity and I think this new league backed by both Tiger Woods and Rory and team will bring a fresh perspective to the sport I adore.”
In May, Horan took a tour of the TGL facility in Jupiter, Florida, and tested the technology that golfers will utilize when the league officially begins in January 2025. Boston Common Group is currently one of six squads in TGL.
Horan's social media presence, with 72 million combined followers on Instagram and X, will boost the team's profile online.
Niall Horan once caddied for TGL partner Rory McIlroy
The partnership between Niall Horan and Rory McIlroy extends back much further than their new crossover with TGL. As Horan mentioned in his statement, they've been friends for a long time.
In 2015, that friendship resulted in Horan working the bag for the pro golfer.
At the 2015 Masters Tournament Par 3 Contest, the two had a bet. This event exists to allow friends and family to play a round with their golfer, whether on the bag or doing something else.
Horan carried the bag for McIlroy and took a tee shot for him on the ninth hole. Horan said at the time (via The Augusta Chronicle):
“That was part of the deal, if I went on the bag with him, he’d come up on stage and sing with us."
At the time, Horan was still with One Direction. He's now a solo artist and is investing in a budding golf league as a part owner for Rory McIlroy's club.
