"As a golfer, I get it" - Phil Mickelson has a laugh about Donald Trump and Joe Biden's golf handicap discussion during debate

The presidential debate garnered much attention, even from golfers like Phil Mickelson. On Thursday night, Donald Trump and Joe Biden were involved in a debate regarding the economy and other country-related matters. However, the conversation soon pivoted to the topic of golf and their expertise in the sport.

When Phil Mickelson got to know about it, he gave his take on the debate and wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) handle that both the former president and the current president got personal with each other when it came down to golf.

“After watching the debate last night, I feel it never got personal until they started talking golf handicaps and who hits the longest drives. As a golfer, I get it,” Mickelson wrote.

Donald Trump started the discussion by mentioning his fitness and how he won two championships. He said (as quoted by the New York Times):

“I just won two club championships — not even senior — two regular club championships.”

Soon, Biden started boasting about his handicap, stating that it was 6, which led to Trump making fun of it as the conversation got more heated.

It's quite known that Donald Trump has a huge involvement in golf. He played with Tiger Woods and Brooks Koepka and also has many courses on his name, which are used to organize tournaments.

Phil Mickelson’s best handicap index in golf

Phil Mickelson is heralded as one of the best golfers with an astounding career. Even though he moved to LIV, he still maintained his form in the PIF-backed league. In 2020, at the Match Champions for Charity, Phil Mickelson's handicap index was measured. Then, he maintained a handicap index as high as +6.

Other than Mickelson, Tiger Woods' handicap index was also calculated to be around +7.1. These two scores in the handicap index were considered the best for both the legends. The handicap digits were calculated by Steve Edmondson and Lee Rainwater.

As far as Phil Mickelson's lifetime achievements are considered, he has six major championships and 45 PGA Tour wins. His professional wins have reached 57 in total, including 11 in the European Tour and 1 in the Challenge Tour.

Mickelson has had an underwhelming 2024 season on tour, with no wins in the LIV league so far. His best finish was at LIV Golf Jeddah, where he settled for a T6 position. At LIV Golf Singapore, he landed at T22.

Phil Mickelson appeared in all three majors but didn't have the luck to clinch any title. His best performance was at the Masters Tournament, where he ended at T43 place. In the other two majors, he couldn't get through the cutline. His next appearance will be at LIV Golf Andalucia on July 12.
