Beau Hossler joins unique scoring club at Wyndham Championship, becomes favorite to win
Amid the weather-affected opening round of the Wyndham Championship, Beau Hossler joined an exclusive club on Friday, August 10. After shooting a 10-under 60, he became the fourth player to achieve this score this season and the 56th in the tournament's history.
Beau Hossler looked focused from the first hole, making four straight birdies, followed by an eagle on the fifth. He birdied the eighth to close the front nine at 7-under 28. With a 59 looking well within reach, he birdied the 10th hole but bogeyed the next. He picked up three more birdies to finish the day at 10-under 60.
Before Hossler, Nick Dunlap (The American Express), Wyndham Clark (AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am), and Nick Taylor (WM Phoenix Open) had each shot a 60 on the PGA Tour this season. Coincidentally, all three went on to win their respective tournaments. It will be interesting to see if the 29-year-old American follows suit.
"I played really nicely," Hossler said on his performance. "I drove it well and particularly probably the highlight of the round was just mid irons. A few 6 irons I hit really close, 5-iron I almost made a hole-in-one. It was one of those days where it felt like kind of everything went right."
"If you drive the ball in the fairway, it's very scorable," he added. "But playing this course from the rough, and then there's five or six like particularly daunting tee shots for me, blind and kind of got to curve it a little bit. In the past they've given me a bit of trouble, today I drove it beautifully."
Beau Hossler now has a two-stroke lead over Billy Horschel, who was 8-under for the round with two holes to go. This is his first start since the runner-up finish at the Open Championship. Nick Taylor was at 7-under and had four more holes to play in the opening round.
