Billy Horschel snubs LIV golf as he calls DP World the “second best” tournament in the world
Billy Horschel snubbed LIV Golf as he called the DP World Tour the second-best circuit. The American golfer is preparing to compete at the season-ending championship of the European circuit this week, the DP World Tour Championship.
Horschel, who primarily competes on the PGA Tour, reflected on playing on the DP World Tour. This season, he has competed in only three events on the European Tour, winning the BMW PGA Championship, which helped him secure a spot in the top 50 of the Race to Dubai rankings and qualify for the DP World Tour Championship.
Ahead of the tournament, he spoke about the circuit in a press conference. He said, via ASAP Sports:
"I support this tour. I love this tour. I think the world of this tour. But at the same time, I don't support this tour 20-plus events out of the year. Obviously the PGA TOUR is where I play mostly but I want to make sure that these guys understand how special this tour is, how special I think it is, and then what I think of them as golfers. I think they are really great players out here.
"I think it's honestly -- and quality and talent-wise, I think it's the second-best tour in the world, and you see it on a regular basis. And the more I come over here the more, I'm impressed by the way these guys play on TV, I always have but when you see it in person you get a better perspective of the players," he added.
The 2024 DP World Tour Championship features a stellar field of top-ranked European Tour players such as Rory McIlroy, Thriston Lawrence, and Tommy Fleetwood. The event will begin with its first round on Thursday, November 14, and conclude with its final round on Sunday, November 17.
"I'm excited to be here" – Billy Horschel shares his excitement to play in the finale of the DP World Tour
Billy Horschel expressed his enthusiasm for competing in the season-ending event on the DP World Tour. He shared his excitement, saying, via ASAP Sports:
"I'm excited to be here. Listen, it's their Tour Championship. It's their last event of the year. It means a lot to everyone who gets here. It's very similar to our TOUR Championship on the PGA TOUR.
"So you know, when I won Wentworth this, wasn't on my schedule originally and then when I won, I felt like I needed to make sure I show up and attend a special event, and that's what I'm doing. I'm looking forward to hopefully a great week. I haven't done a lot of practise over the last month. Greens are a little rusty but we'll just see what happens," he added.
Billy Horschel started his campaign on the DP World Tour at the BMW PGA Championship, where he shot rounds of 67, 69, 65, and 67 to win the event. He later played at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and Open de France but missed the cut in both tournaments.
Horschel finished in fourth place in the Race to Dubai standings and is eligible to play in the DP World Tour Championship. The tournament is scheduled to take place from November 14 to 17 in Dubai.
