Bryson DeChambeau called out by ex-coach after the LIV Golfer defunds junior golf tour, shutting doors on young golfers – “I’m a little pissed”
Bryson DeChambeau's former coach, Mike Schy, expressed deep disappointment over DeChambeau's decision to discontinue the Central Valley Jon DeChambeau Championship due to lack of funds. Schy recently revealed the unfortunate news that the tournament will no longer be held.
In an exclusive interview with Golf Week, he criticized the golfer for withdrawing funding from the tournaments and shared his dismay. Following the tournament's announcement, the media outlet contacted Mike Schy, who admitted he was "a little pissed" about the tournament's closure and posted his feelings on the internet.
“I had to post that. I’m a little pissed. I’m a little salty for a number of reasons, one of which is he made me look bad again," Schy said.
Mike Schy was DeChambeau's swing coach in the past. The two had a strong partnership on the golf course but haven't worked together since 2018.
Despite no longer coaching DeChambeau, Schy proudly showcases the golfer's achievements on his Instagram.
His Instagram bio reads, "Long-time coach of 8-time PGA Tour winner & 2020/2024 US Open champion @brysondechambeau."
They had worked together since DeChambeau was just eleven years old. Schy was DeChambeau's caddie when he won the 2015 US Amateur. However, they parted ways after the 2018 PGA Championship, after which Bryson DeChambeau went on to work with Chris Como and later Dana Dahlquist.
"It’s a complete and utter lie"- Bryson DeChambeau's response to his former coach regarding the cancellation of the junior golf event
Bryson DeChambeau shared his side of the story regarding the cancellation of the Central Valley Jon DeChambeau Championship. In a phone interview with Golf Weekly on Wednesday, July 10, the LIV golfer referred to Schy as a "disgruntled employee" and explained the reasons behind the tournament's closure.
"It’s a complete and utter lie, all of it. It’s a disgruntled former employee, unfortunately, and it is what it is. We’ve had numerous conversations and it hasn’t worked out from a business standpoint," DeChambeau said.
“It’s quite disappointing how he’s turned this and spun this. It’s a non-recourse loan that was going out. I gave him my dad’s name, image, and likeness for free on the assumption we’d have a good business plan and it just hasn’t worked out. I’m going to be doing a lot for my community, just in a different fashion with a proper business plan and done correctly," he added.
The relationship between the golfer and the ex-coach appears to have soured.
Meanwhile, Bryson DeChambeau will tee off at this week's Andalucia event starting July 12. The LIV golfer is also preparing to compete in the upcoming final Major of the year, the British Open, scheduled for next week.
DeChambeau has performed well in all the Majors he has participated in during 2024, raising fans' expectations for the upcoming event.
