Bryson DeChambeau details what makes Scottie Scheffler the “gold standard” ahead of the US Open
Bryson DeChambeau doesn't get to compete directly with Scottie Scheffler very often. DeChambeau left for LIV Golf a few years ago, meaning Major tournaments like this weekend's US Open are his only shot at playing against the World No. 1.
Despite that, he's been watching from afar. He's seen the incredible hot streak that Scheffler has been on, including five wins this season. Ahead of their next matchup, DeChambeau spoke on what makes Scheffler so good.
The golfer said (4:43-5:58):
"I tried asking him that a couple days ago when we flew in here. I saw him and I was like, 'You're playing unbelievable, what are you doing?' and he was like, 'Ah, I'm just playing good golf, I don't know.' It's one of those things."
DeChambeau added that from his perspective, Scheffler has total control of his swing and has figured out a lot of his putting. The LIV star also added that Scheffler seems to play strategic golf:
"He doesn't go too crazy. He just hits the right shots at the right time. He's really in control of the environment, not only his environment but the conditions on the golf course. He knows what the golf ball is going to do, he knows how to react accordingly."
DeChambeau said when things do go awry, Scheffler is able to right the ship most of the time:
"He's been able to do it longer than anyone. Again, he is the gold standard right now. We're all looking up to him going, 'All right, how do we get to that level?'"
Everyone is currently chasing Scheffler, as he's well clear of the field on the Official World Golf Ranking and has more success than anyone on either tour in 2024. He has won five times on the PGA Tour, including the Masters Tournament, the Players Championship, and two Signature Events.
Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau will face off again
In the two head-to-head meetings between these golfers, Scottie Scheffler took the first round by defeating everyone at the Masters. Bryson DeChambeau was nine shots back in a tie for sixth.
At the PGA Championship, DeChambeau fell one stroke shy of winning but did top Scheffler by seven points on the final leaderboard. The third installment will take place this weekend June 13-16 at Pinehurst.
Golf is a head-to-head sport technically, but it's not as if there is a 1-1 record between them now. Scheffler has one win and one T8. DeChambeau has a T6 and a solo second.
Nevertheless, both these golfers have played well during the Majors and will try to come out on top this weekend. Scheffler is the betting favorite, and Bryson DeChambeau is tied with Brooks Koepka for the best odds for a LIV player.
