Bryson DeChambeau jumps 28 spots in OWGR rankings after US Open win, reaches highest ranking since joining LIV Golf
Bryson DeChambeau’s US Open triumph bestowed the LIV golfer with several perks. Not only did he receive a paycheck of $4.3 million, but also climbed up the OWGR rankings. Moreover, this is his highest-ever rank since joining LIV Golf. According to the official OWGR page, the 30-year-old jumped from 38 to 10 with 100 world ranking points.
With that, he replaced Max Homa on the list, who stood at 10 last week. Now, Homa sits at 15th after failing to make the cut at the US Open. Other players who benefited from the US Open are Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay. McIlroy jumped from third to second. Then, Cantlay climbed up from last week's ninth to eighth by replacing Jon Rahm.
With his victory, Bryson DeChambeau earned 750 FedEx points, 10 years of US Open exemption, and five years of major exemptions. This means that he will show up at the Open Championship to try his luck.
Other than the US Open, DeChambeau showed consistency throughout the 2024 run. In 2023, his OWGR rank stood at 155, which reached 124 after a T6 position at the Masters Tournament. Following that, his runner-up finish at the PGA Championship landed him at 38. After the US Open, as he enters the top ten, there might be chances for a better rank with the Open Championship.
Bryson DeChambeau's strong stance against OWGR backlash
Bryson DeChambeau blatantly called out the OWGR association several times. He called the system “not accurate” and denounced their procedure. DeChambeau even stated how LIV fulfilled the OWGR criteria but the association didn't pay heed.
“They said ‘you need certain requirements’, we have fulfilled all those requirements, despite what everybody thinks…“If you go look at their handbook, we have fulfilled every single criteria. It’s been over two years now. What’s going on guys?” said DeChambeau (via Golf Monthly).
He continued, “It’s a bit frustrating, but nothing we can do at this moment. If we showcase ourselves in the Major championships there’s no way they can keep us out. We just got to play well in the Majors and once we do, they have no choice.”
As promised, finally, the American utilized his chances at the majors and worked out his plan to reach the top ten on the world list. While Bryson DeChambeau's rank soared, LIV players like Jon Rahm fell from World No. 3 to 9. Added to that, around 17 LIV golfers couldn’t qualify for the 2024 US Open.
The names include MVP golfers like Sergio Garcia, Graeme McDowell, and others. The OWGR system has become a great ordeal for LIV Golf. If this continues, no sooner the majors might miss on star-studded fields. Hence, a resolution is expected through the PGA-LIV merger, which crossed two deadlines.
