Bryson DeChambeau's equipment change for 2024 U.S. Open Major revealed
Bryson DeChambeau is at Pinehurst No. 2 to play in the 2024 U.S. Open beginning Thursday, June 13. He will be debuting new equipment designed to his own specifications.
It is his iron 5, which DeChambeau conceived and had built with a curvature that runs horizontally, from tip to grip. The irons usually have a curvature that runs from top to bottom.
Bryson DeChambeau shared details of his new iron 5 with Johnson Wagner during an interview for Golf Channel. The 2020 U.S. Open champion explained that this new design allows him to gain accuracy without losing distance.
"It's got roll on the face, bulge, whatever term you want to use. But essentially it doesn't roll this way [from the top down] it rolls this way [horizontally]," he said [at 1:10].
He added:
"I created curvature on the toe and the heel to get his start a little further right on the toe and on the heel start a little further left so that it makes sure it doesn't go too far off line much like the driver."
According to Bryson DeChambeau, this new iron 5 was approved by the United States Golf Association (USGA) just before the Masters, an event in which he debuted a set of 3D printed irons that helped him finish in the Top 5.
This redesign of his iron 5 by DeChambeau has started a fan debate on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter).
Some users believe that the USGA should not have allowed a modification of this nature while others take the opposite view, stating that designing a club with specifications tailored to each player is not a club modification at all.
