Can amateurs compete at the Olympics golf event? Rules and eligibility guidelines explored
The Paris Olympics 2024 golf event is set to start in less than two days, and once again, the playing field will feature strictly professional golfers. As of now, amateurs can't compete at the Olympics.
Though the Olympics are traditionally for amateurs and their rulebook states the same, some sports do feature professionals. Golf has been one such game that has allowed pros since its reintroduction in 2016. However, there have been arguments to make it an amateur-only event.
For now, 60 professionals will compete at the Paris Olympics, and the field was decided based on the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) as of June 17 for men. The top 15 players in the OWGR were selected by name and directly secured their quota. However, each country has a maximum limit of four players, and only the USA has four golfers on the field.
Golfers ranked outside the top 15 were selected with a limit of two players per country. All five continents of the Olympic movement were granted at least one athlete. If they didn't secure the berth by automatic selection, the quota was given to the highest-ranked golfer from that continent.
