"Couldn't have really gotten any better"- Tommy Fleetwood discusses his exclusive new TaylorMade putter
Tommy Fleetwood is playing with a new prototype TaylorMade putter at the 2024 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. The English golfer joined the stellar field of the DP World Tour event and made some changes to his bag for this week’s event, replacing his long Odyssey putter with a new TP Soto Truss TF PrototypeTaylorMade putter.
Following the second round of the tournament on November 8, Tommy Fleetwood tied for second place. In the post-round press conference, he opened up about his new putter and looked forward to using it.
Speaking of the new golf gear, Fleetwood said (via ASAP Sports):
"Exciting and fresh to start something new. Like the work. The work that we did with TaylorMade, like the thought process and then the design process. It's been great. It's been great practising with something new and something that feels really, really good. Something that I feel like is mine, if you like, and having that input in the design and yesterday was an unbelievably opener for it. Couldn't have really gotten any better," Fleetwood said.
He also praised his team for trying to find ways to give him an edge over the rest of the field.
"I'm grateful to all the guys that I work with and always trying to find something that can give you even just the slight edge, and so far, so good. I love putting with it and, it's just nice when you put something new in, obviously haven't played a tournament with yet," he added.
Notably, Tommy Fleetwood uses most of his golf equipment from TaylorMade. However, he had been using the Odyssey White Hot Pro 3 throughout this season on the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, before making the switch to his new putter at Abu Dhabi this week.
A look into Tommy Fleetwood's performance with his new putter
Tommy Fleetwood had a fantastic outing with his new putter at the 2024 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, starting with an opening round of 10-under 62 on Thursday, November 7.
Fleetwood teed off on the first hole and made a birdie, followed by an eagle on the next hole and another birdie on the one after. In the first round, he shot eight birdies and an eagle, achieving an impressive round of 10-under.
In the following round on Friday, November 8, the English golfer shot six birdies and two bogeys for a 4-under 68. With a total of 14-under, he is tied for second place. Speaking of his second-round performance at the tournament, Tommy Fleetwood said (via ASAP Sports):
"I mean, 4-under is a pretty good round. It was a bit hit-and-miss at times. Had a few chances that I would have holed yesterday having a really low round. Overall it was a pretty good round. I'm a bit tired. Not used to playing 18 in the heat coming back early morning. So it's not really any excuse but I've got to get used to that again," Fleetwood said.
After the second round of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, Paul Waring took the lead at 19-under, shooting rounds of 64 and 61. Rory McIlroy is also competing in the event, tied for 14th at 10-under in the four-day tournament which will conclude on Sunday, November 10.
