Davis Thompson becomes the third straight John Deere Classic winner from the ‘Trophy House’
Davis Thompson became the third consecutive winner of the John Deere Classic from the popular rental property 'Trophy House.' The Airbnb rental, located just a few miles from the venue of the PGA Tour event, has produced three consecutive winners.
J.T. Poston rented a room there and won the John Deere Classic in 2022, followed by last year's winner Sepp Straka. This year, Thompson opted to stay at the property after Straka decided to move to a hotel room with his wife and newborn baby.
Thompson's wife was back home serving as a bridesmaid for her friend, so he decided to stay with J.T. Poston and his friends at the Airbnb rental. He stayed in Straka's room, and the house produced another winner of the tournament.
Speaking of the six-bedroom house, Thompson said (via PGA Tour):
“It's kind of crazy. I stayed in Sepp's room. Me and him may be fighting for that room next year.”
J.T. Poston and his friends have a unique tradition: if any of their friends win a trophy while staying in the house, the winner has to pay the rent. In 2024, Poston stayed at the venue along with Davis Thompson, Ben Kohles, Greyson Sigg, Denny McCarthy, and Patton Kizzire.
They had a decent outing at the recently concluded PGA Tour event. McCarthy tied for seventh place, while Poston settled for 30th place. Ben Kohles finished with a score of nine-under and tied for 52nd place. Unfortunately, Greyson Sigg and Patton Kizzire missed the cut.
Davis Thompson gets emotional after winning his maiden PGA Tour event at John Deere Classic
Davis Thompson had tears in his eyes as he lifted the trophy of his first PGA Tour event. The American golfer became the 24th player on the Tour to win his maiden event at the John Deere Classic.
He shot a 64 in the finale on Sunday, July 7, to secure an incredible four-stroke victory at the event. Thompson was emotional while talking to the CBS Sports journalist Amanda Balionis after his victory. He was thrilled to see his wife finally able to attend the tournament and witness him winning his maiden PGA Tour event.
Speaking of his win, Thompson said (via CBS Sports on X):
"Just seeing my wife means a lot. I just love her so much and I'm so thankful she was able to make it. Just tried to stay present all day and went it finally went in just a sign of relief."
"It's great, I've been working hard this year, it was ok for a while and I kinda got going this month, played well last week and kinda kept it rolling this week and was able to get the win," he added.
Davis Thompson started his professional journey in 2021 and had previously won a tournament on the Korn Ferry Tour. In 2022, he defeated Vincent Norrman and Andrew Yun to win the Rex Hospital Open by one stroke.
The John Deere Classic was his maiden PGA Tour win. Michael Thorbjornsen, who had recently secured his PGA Tour card by topping the University Ranking in 2024, tied for second place with amateur Luke Clanton and Taiwanese golfer C.T. Pan.
With this victory, Davis Thompson won $1.4 million in prize money along with 500 FedEx Cup points. He also earned exemptions to compete in the upcoming major, The Open Championship, and the 2025 Masters.
