Davis Thompson details his failed ambitious plan after securing his maiden PGA Tour win
Davis Thompson revealed his unsuccessful attempt to compete in all four majors in 2024 after winning his maiden PGA Tour event at the 2024 John Deere Classic on Sunday. During the tournament's press conference, the American golfer shared that he had planned to compete in all the majors this year. However, he could only play in the US Open in 2024, where he tied for ninth place.
Speaking to the media, Thompson mentioned that he has improved his game recently and is happy with his win at the John Deere Classic. He said (via Ten Golf's YouTube channel):
"My goal coming this year was to try to play in all four majors. And unfortunately, I didn't play the Masters of the PGA, but my game's just come along these last few months. " (10:15-10:29)
Notably, with the victory at the John Deere Classic, Davis Thompson earned an exemption to compete at The Open Championship 2024 and the Masters 2025. He expressed excitement about competing in the upcoming major at Royal Troon in Scotland. He went on to talk about The Open Championship, saying:
"To be able to qualify for such a historic event like the Open is awesome. And I've never been over Scotland. So I'm pretty excited to get over there and prepare and, like I said, hopefully get some rest." (10:29-10:42)
Davis Thompson will make his Masters debut in 2025. He turned pro in 2021 and has already clinched trophies in two events. He will make his debut at The Open this month, although he played at the PGA Championship in 2023 but did not make the cut.
"Obviously, those are the goals"- Davis Thompson shares future plans and insights for his golf career
Davis Thompson is looking forward to competing in the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup following his victory at the John Deere Classic. After his win at TPC Deere Run, the Atlanta-born golfer discussed his plans and his goal to qualify for the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup.
Speaking of the prestigious tournaments, Thompson said (via PGA Tour):
“Yeah, I mean, obviously those are the goals. But now that I've got my first win, I feel like the work is only beginning. The goal is to play this game for 20-plus years and have a great career."
Thompson also revealed that he looks forward to competing in the upcoming Genesis Scottish Open before joining the stellar field at the British Open later this month. He added:
“Yeah, as far as goals, honestly, just not really thinking about that right now. Just hopefully trying to get some sleep on (the Deere) charter flight to the Genesis Scottish Open."
Davis Thompson has played in 20 PGA Tour events in 2024 and made the cut in 15. He has two runner-up finishes this season and four top-10 finishes. He tied for second place at the Rocket Mortgage Classic before joining the John Deere Classic field. He will next tee off at the 2024 Genesis Scottish Open, scheduled to take place from July 11 to 14 at The Renaissance Club.
