Did DP World Tour reject Jon Rahm’s chance to play at the 2025 Ryder Cup? Reports explored
The DP World Tour has reportedly diminished Jon Rahm's chances of competing in European Tour events, which could ultimately impact his selection for the Ryder Cup 2025. To play for the European team in the prestigious tournament, a golfer must fulfill two conditions: first, the player should be European, and second, they must hold a DP World Tour membership.
While Rahm meets the first criterion, he needs to play in at least four events on the DP World Tour to retain his membership. Although Rahm competed at the Paris Olympics, which counts as one event, he still needs to participate in three more events by the end of the year.
Recently, Sports Illustrated reported that LIV Golf proposed a deal with the DP World Tour to cover the fines for their players. However, the European circuit has reportedly declined this proposal.
Jon Rahm played in the Ryder Cup in 2023. He was part of the winning European team, but later that year he joined LIV Golf and is now struggling with qualification for the team event.
Jon Rahm challenges DP World Tour fines in appeal
Rahm is leaving no stone unturned in his bid to earn a spot in the 2025 Ryder Cup. He has appealed the DP World Tour fines to secure a spot in upcoming events on the circuit. He is hoping to compete in his home open, scheduled to take place from September 26 to 29, and has made an appeal to earn a spot in the field.
Jon Rahm had earlier expressed in a pre-tournament press conference for the 2024 LIV Golf Chicago event that he was not a fan of paying the fines. He said (as quoted by CNN):
“I’m not a big fan of the fines. I think I’ve been outspoken about that. I don’t intend to pay the fines, and we keep trying to have a discussion with them about how we can make this happen.”
However, he has since made an appeal. A spokesperson for the DP World Tour has opened up about his appeal with CNN, saying:
“Jon Rahm has a pending appeal against sanctions imposed on him and in accordance with the DP World Tour’s Regulations, he is eligible to participate in the acciona Open de España presented by Madrid later this month."
The decision on the appeal will determine if Jon Rahm can compete at the Spanish Open. Even if Rahm is allowed to play in the Spanish Open later this month, he still needs to compete in two more events by the end of the year.
According to CNN, the French Open and South Korea's Genesis Invitational would only be two events this season in which Rahm can play on the DP World Tour.
