Fred Couples wants players on Tour to be more like Bob Drum

Fred Couples shared some advice this week for the new generation of golfers. Couples is playing at the PNC Championship this week and before the tournament, the golfer joined a press conference, where he was asked how golfers on Tour could become better entertainers.

Couples said,

“Sometimes I sit and think about that, what did I do? You know, I get mad. But I mean when you play well, you got to give the people more than they expect and when you play poorly then that's when it becomes... you don't want to do anything stupid" [0:10].

Remembering the late golf writer Bod Drum, Couples said,

our Tour is really what I'm worried about and I don't even watch their Tour[LIV]. But our guys need to show a little more[…] Bob Drum. I love 'The Drummer.' I think if someone like that could come, bingo! You remember any of his little things. Well he used to get players involved. I think that's fun, I don't know if anyone knows anything about Luke List or Patrick Cantlay, besides 'Patrick Cantlay seems to not be friendly,' well he's one of my bestfriends and he's as friendly as anyone.”

Fred Couples will tee off with Hunter Hannemann in the first round of the PNC Championship at 10:31 am ET. Couples didn't play in the last two editions of the PNC Championship, with Team Langer winning in 2023 and Team Singh winning the trophy in 2022.

How did Fred Couples perform in the 2024 season so far?

Fred Couples only played at the Masters Tournament on the PGA Tour in 2024. In the major tournament, he missed the cutline after shooting rounds of 80 and 76. Couples played in seven tournaments on the 2024 PGA Tour Champions and he had four top-30 finishes, including a T18 at the Boeing Classic, a T21 at the Chubb Classic, a T22 at the PURE Insurance Championship, and a T28 at the Constellation FURYK & FRIENDS.
