Greg Norman’s son uses Donald Trump to make fun of Jay Monahan amid PGA x LIV merger
Greg Norman Jr., the son of the CEO of LIV Golf, had a take in the wake of Donald Trump's election. The PGA Tour x PIF merger is the biggest issue in golf right now, and several people, including Norman Jr., believe Trump's election will move things along.
The CEO's son posted a meme of Trump standing on an LIV Golf course. The caption indicated that Trump would call up PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan and use his presidential powers to help get the merger over the finish line.
This is not an uncommon idea. Rory McIlroy shared something in the immediate aftermath of the election. The golfer said via Bunkered:
“He might be able to. He’s got Elon Musk, who I think is the smartest man in the world, beside him. We might be able to do something if we can get Musk involved, too."
McIlroy said things may not be as complicated as they seem. He also added that Trump's relationship with Saudi Arabia might help in the negotiations. The Irishman noted that Trump also loves golf, so there's a chance he may want to get involved before concluding:
“But I think as the President of the United States again, he’s probably got bigger things to focus on than golf.”
Trump won't officially take office until January. Until then, the merger negotiations between reps from the PGA Tour and PIF will continue. It is unclear if the president-elect will ever officially get involved.
Donald Trump confident he could get LIV Golf PGA Tour merger done
Donald Trump, before he was officially elected president of the United States again, acknowledged that he would probably have "much bigger problems" than the current issues in golf to address. With that said, he's hopeful of something turning around.
Via Bunkered, he expressed his desire for the sport to have one tour with the "best players" together:
“Because when Scotty wins or when they win on the other tour, we have a lot of… there’s a lot of great players. I mean, beyond great. It’s really top, top players on LIV."
He went on to say that it's "terrible" when a LIV Golf player can't make it into a Major championship. Donald Trump did clarify that the golfers are "very happy" with their move, but that he personally wishes they'd get something done.
Trump also said:
“I could certainly help, but I could probably get it done. I would say it would take me the better part of 15 minutes to get that deal done.”
The merger has been up in the air since the summer of 2023 when the framework of the deal was initially agreed to.
