"He was about to puke"- Xander Schauffele had to calm his caddie down on the 18th hole of The Open Championship
Xander Schauffele picked up his second major victory of the year at The 2024 Open Championship, following up his 2024 PGA Championship victory with an excellent late surge in the final round on Sunday.
Justin Rose and Billy Horschel finished in joint second place, two shots behind the winner. Throughout the day, Schauffele climbed his way up the leaderboard before taking the lead during the last few holes of The Open. Heading into the final hole, Schauffele knew that he had the chance to win.
However, it seemed that his caddie Austin Kaiser was more nervous than him. Calming him down, Schauffele walked up confidently to the 18th hole. Reminiscing about the moments ahead of the winning shot, the 30-year-old said (via Telegraph):
"For some reason, I was calm and collected. I was telling my caddie Austin that I felt pretty calm coming down the stretch and he said he was about to puke on the 18th tee! I just told myself to just hit it down there and keep moving along!"
Xander Schauffele eventually went on to win The Open Championship. He will be taking home the Claret Jug and a prize money of $3.1 million, out of the $17 million total purse.
