"He's the new love of my life"- Lydia Ko details whether she would choose her dog or a major championship win
Lydia Ko loves her dog and her husband knows this well. When it comes to the ultimate achievement in golf, winning a Major, the golfer wouldn't trade her dog for such success. After winning the AIG Women's Open, the fifth and final Major of the season, she discussed her win and the time her husband asked whether she would trade the dog for a Major.
Ko recalled the story after the win on August 25 (via ASAP Sports):
"My husband, I remember, asked me this like last year, and he said -- it was a very, like, aggressive question. But he was like, 'Would you rather have our dog and not win a major again?'"
"I said, 'No, I want to have Kai.' Because I'm really proud to say that I won a major championship. Like he's the new love of my life," she continued.
Ko said that she is a golfer and Majors are "the biggest thing" in her field, but insisted that she wouldn't make the trade even if it guaranteed a third career Major victory. But now she can say she has a dog and another Major, which was "pretty cool" for her.
"But yeah, it's difficult," the 2024 Olympic gold medalist added. "We are all trying to peak at the five majors but it's hard to kind of time that; and how do you time that? You're just waiting for that moment. You know, of all the majors, I didn't think this one would be the one for my third time just because I haven't really been in contention very much."
Ko shot seven under across the four rounds, including three under in the final round, to win the AIG Women's Open Championship over Ruoning Yin, Shin-ji Yai, Nelly Korda and Lilia Vu by two strokes.
Lydia Ko details AIG Women's Open win
Lydia Ko has seen a lot of success in the last few weeks, including a Major win at the AIG Women's Open and an Olympic gold medal. She described it as a "crazy" period of time for her.
Lydia Ko also explained it was "too good to be true" but it happened. The golfer noted that winning at St. Andrews on the Old Course was something special, too.
She said via ASAP Sports:
"I just loved being out there this week," Lydia Ko said (via ASAP Sports). "I had a lot of family members here with me. I played here when I was 16 in 2013, I think I was 16. I was 16. I don't think I got to really enjoy and realize what an amazing place this is, and now that I'm a little older and hopefully a little wiser, I just got to realize what a historic and special place this golf course is, and it's honestly been such a fairy tale."
Ko finished by saying she was on "cloud nine." Her win propelled her to the number 12 rank in the Rolex world rankings for women's golf.
