"He’s reverted to his old ways"- Fans react to Matt Wallace’s heated bust-up with his caddie
Matt Wallace berated his caddie, Sam Bernard, at this week's Valspar Championship. The Englishman lost his temper on the 18th hole of the tournament and burst out at his caddie. He was heard saying, "Shut the F*** up."
Wallace struggled with his shot on the 17th hole. He hit a shot and the ball ended up on an asphalt cart path. The 32-year-old was frustrated with his performance and when Bernard tried to explain something, he shouted at him.
A fan account took to social media to share a post about the incident and wrote in the caption:
"Matt Wallace and his caddie getting in a dispute of some sorts in the 18th fairway. The only thing I could make out was a very clear "Shut the f*** up" from Wallace. Which is sick."
Fans reacted in the comments section and highlighted that it was nothing serious as he previously did that. People found it to be a very common behaviour of Matt Wallace. They wrote:
"He’s reverted to his old ways, has he. He had multiple such on-course dust-ups with caddies on the (now) DP Tour."
Another clip went viral on social media in which the two were seen hugging and laughing after the third round of the Valspar Championship. Fans mentioned that in the comments and wrote:
"I witnessed his other side, where, after his round, he looked for a young kid who was following him round the course applauding, thanked him, spent some time chatting, then gave him a club. Doesn’t have a PR machine to make a big deal of it though."
"They did hug it out after the round. Dispute about whether or not to take a drop-off path."
Matt Wallace is just two shots behind the lead at the Valspar Championship
The Valspar Championship is underway at the Copperhead course from March 16 to March 19. The tournament has had an amazing start, with Adam Schenk maintaining the lead over the last three days.
Matt Wallace also has a fair chance of winning the tournament. He is three shots behind the lead, securing the seventh position after the third round. Wallace started the tournament with a birdie on the first hole followed by a bogey.
He then went on to make two more birdies and as many bogeys in the opening round to finish at 71.
On Friday, he made six birdies and just two bogeys to increase his ranking on the leaderboard. Wallace finished with a scoring deficit of four in the second round. In the third round, he played well, but the bogey on the 17th hole irked him.
Journalist Cara Banks reached out to Wallace to talk about his performance and his fight with caddie Sam. She later reported:
"Matt was simply frustrated with his bogey on 17 and the errant drive on 18. He was frustrated at Sam questioning whether he should take a drop before the second shot. He felt he should just play it as it lies, as he did. Sam questioning him interfered with his flow.”
