Hideki Matsuyama's win at FedEx St. Jude Championship draws 2,211,000 viewers as downward trend in golf continues
Hideki Matsuyama registered a monumental victory at the 2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship. After four rounds at the TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee, Matsuyama scored 65-64-64-70 to beat the likes of Xander Schauffele and Viktor Hovland who finished T2.
While the FedEx St. Jude Championship ended in great fashion for Matsuyama, the same can't be said for the sport of golf. Matsuyama's win in Memphis drew 2,211,000 viewers. This is a problem because it's the continuation of a downward trend.
When the FedEx St. Jude Championship arrived in Memphis for the first time in 2022, the tournament drew a total of 2.967M viewers. Later, in 2023, when Lucas Glover won the competition, there was a rise in viewership as the FedEx St. Jude Championship drew 3.207M that year.
However, Hideki Matsuyama's victory, which drew 2,211,000, will be a concern going forward. It will be interesting to see if the situation improves going forward as 50 players are about to play in the second stage of the playoff this week at the 2024 BMW Championship in Colorado.
