How did Brooks Koepka get knocked out of LIV Golf Team Championship in Dallas?
Brooks Koepka's team, Smash GC, faced an early exit from the LIV Golf Team Championship in Dallas. The fourth-seeded team was upset by Kevin Na's Iron Heads GC, the lowest-seeded team in the event.
On Friday, September 20, Smash GC and Iron Heads GC faced off in the first quarterfinal of the day at Maridoe Golf Club. Koepka's team was considered the favorite given their performance this season. Iron Heads, on the other hand, hadn’t done anything significant this year but pulled off an upset, surprising all the oddsmakers.
The first singles match was played between the two captains, where Koepka easily beat Kevin Na 6&5. However, the bottom-ranked team made a comeback in the second singles as Danny Lee edged Talor Gooch 1-up. This was Iron Heads' first-ever win in the LIV Golf Team Championship, as they were 0-6 in the first two seasons.
Jinichiro Kozuma and Scott Vincent faced Jason Kokrak and Graeme McDowell in the foursomes match. It seemed Iron Heads were headed for another quarterfinal loss after the Vincent-Kozuma duo was 4-down through the first 11 holes.
However, things changed when Vincent made an ace on the 14th hole. Kozuma then made a clutch birdie putt on the 18th to tie the match after regulation. In the extra hole, Kozuma's par putt was enough to secure Iron Heads their first quarterfinal win.
Speaking at the post-round interview, Vincent described the whole experience as unbelievable.
"This is exactly what the match play brings, just a lot of unknowns and amazing opportunities," he said as per LIV Golf. "To bounce back from being four shots down at one stage, that was just incredible."
Kevin Na showered praise on Kozuma for his clutch performance on the final hole.
"Danny (Lee) looked over at me, he goes, watch this, he's going to make this," he said. "I was like, I hope so, and he sure did. Jini really showed the world, I think, what he's made of."
However, this wasn't the only upset of the day, as 12th-seeded HyFlyers defeated 5th-seeded Torque GC to advance to the semifinals of the LIV Golf Team Championship.
