How much will golfers win at LIV Golf Mayakoba? Prize money payouts explored

LIV Golf is back. The new and extended LIV Golf League will kickstart on Thursday, February 23, with the LIV Golf Mayakoba tournament. The event will see golfers from the series’ 12 teams take each other on at the El Camaleón Mayakoba Golf Course in Mexico for the top prize.

The Mayakoba event will be the LIV Golf League’s first of 14 events in 2023. The 48-player field, headlined by the likes of Cameron Smith, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau, and more, will compete against each other for the $25 million prize purse on offer. According to LIV's prize money distribution chart, the winner of the event will bag $4,000,000 - the standard 20 percent payout from the purse.

Unlike its PGA Tour rivals, the LIV event will not have a cut after 36 holes. The 54-hole tournament will reward all players who finish three rounds of the tournament. Golfers will bag parts of the $20 million individual portion of the prize pool. Meanwhile, the top three teams in the 12-team concurrent format will split the remaining $5 million. While the winning team gets $3 million, the runner-up will take $1.5 million and $500,000 goes to the third.

It’s good to be back 😎 Mayakoba event week is here 🇲🇽

It is pertinent to note that the rebel series event will not award players with Official World Golf Ranking points. Points earned by individual players will add up to the league’s season-long bonus system. The individual winner and team winner of the league will be decided at the team championship held in Saudi Arabia in November.

It is pertinent to note that the 2023 LIV Golf League’s inaugural event clashes with the PGA Tour’s Honda Classic. Unlike the Saudi-backed series, the American circuit event has a limited prize purse of $8.4 million, with a $1.5 million cut for the winner. However, the event offers 42 Official World Golf Ranking points to the champion.

As the rebel series returns for another season, it’ll be interesting to see how it competes against its rival PGA Tour.
