"I disagree with Scottie Scheffler"- Billy Horschel takes stand against World No. 1 golfer's 'silly' take on FedEx Cup playoffs
Billy Horschel disagreed with Scottie Scheffler's "silly" comment about the FedEx Cup Playoffs. At the end of the regular PGA Tour season, the top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings compete in the playoffs.
Ahead of last week's St. Jude Championship, Scottie Scheffler expressed his thoughts on these events, stating (via ClutchPoints):
“I talked about it the last few years, I think it's silly. You can't call it a season-long race and have it come down to one tournament.”
Recently, ahead of the second playoff event at the BMW Championship, Billy Horschel was asked to share his opinion on the FedEx Cup Playoffs. In response, the American golfer stated that he disagreed with Scheffler.
Speaking about the playoffs, Horschel commented (via ASAP Sports):
"I disagree with Scottie. Scottie said it's silly. I don't agree with that. I think we have a system now that -- it's never rewarded the best player throughout the regular season. I won the '14 FedExCup. Rory McIlroy was clearly the best player that year. He had won two majors. He came in on a high note. I was 69th in the start of the FedEx.
"I missed the first cut. I go second, win, win, and I win the FedExCup. It's no different than the New York Giants and beating the New England Patriots and starting the Playoffs 9-7 I think it was and the Patriots being undefeated and then winning the Super Bowl," he added.
The 2024 FedEx Cup Playoffs began last week with the St. Jude Championship, where Hideki Matsuyama emerged victorious. Following that event, players will tee off at this week's BMW Championship and then head to the season-concluding Tour Championship.
Despite his shocking comment, Scottie Scheffler still has his eyes on winning the FedEx Cup: "I'd Love to Win the TOUR Championship"
Scottie Scheffler is aiming to win the Tour Championship despite his "silly" comment. The American golfer discussed winning the FedEx Cup during a pre-tournament press conference at the 2024 St. Jude Championship last week.
He said (via ASAP Sports):
"I feel like it's the same thing with the TOUR Championship. Is it a tournament I'd love to win? Yeah, I'd love to win the TOUR Championship. It would be awesome. I'd also love to win this tournament. I'd love to win next week."
Scottie Scheffler has been in incredible form in 2024, with six tournament victories and a gold medal at the Paris Olympics. He is one of the favorites to win the BMW Championship this week, with odds of +320 according to CBS Sports.
Scheffler will tee off for this week's event in a group with Xander Schauffele on Thursday, August 22, at 11:00 a.m. ET. Notably, PGA Tour players will compete in the season-ending Tour Championship next week following this week's BMW Championship.
