"I don’t blame them" - Jason Day reveals why LIV Golf rejected him
Former World No.1 Jason Day recently revealed his real reason for not joining LIV Golf. Over the last three years, dozens of players from different golf series around the world have signed up with the Saudi-backed LIV Golf.
Australian golfer Jason Day, who is preparing to play on home soil for the Australian PGA Championship, recently made a shocking revelation that he did not get a chance to talk to LIV Golf about a deal to join the circuit, as they were not interested in having him. In an interview with Code Sports Australia, the PGA Tour player said (via Golf Digest):
"I didn’t knock it back. What happened was, it was a business move to just go in and explore the potential of what would happen. I said [to my agent], ‘No worries, I’m happy with where I’m at, but it’s always nice to know.’ And they [LIV Golf] said, ‘We love Jason, but he’s too injured; he just gets too many injuries.’
“I don’t blame them,” he added.
Jason Day enjoys a remarkable career on the PGA Tour. He rose to become the World No.1 golfer and won a Major at the PGA Championship in 2015. He has 19 professional wins, 13 of them on the PGA Tour. He is undeniably one of the most successful golfers on the PGA Tour.
However, Jason Day has also faced his own struggles in the game. He did not win any tournament for around four years before ending the winless drought at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson. Before that, he won the Wells Fargo Championship in 2018.
But finally, the Aussie is getting back to good form, as he won a tournament last year and recorded some impressive finishes in 2024. The 36-year-old had four top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour this year.
"I hope we join back together" – Jason Day on PGA Tour and LIV Golf merger
Although LIV Golf reportedly rejected Jason Day, he does not hold any grudges against them and has been having a fantastic time playing on the PGA Tour. Since the inception of LIV Golf, the golf world has witnessed dynamic changes. Initially, the PGA Tour was against the Saudi circuit, but soon after, in June 2023, they announced a framework agreement with the circuit. However, the deal is still not finalized.
Jason Day opened up about the potential merger between both circuits and said (via Golf Digest):
"I’m hoping we join back together because there’s definitely a lot of players on the LIV tour that we miss on the PGA Tour. I’ve always played very central with LIV and just never really got in the politics of it all.”
Meanwhile, Day will tee off at the 2024 Australian PGA Championship, which is scheduled to take place from November 21 to 24 at the Royal Queensland Golf Club in Australia. Interestingly, LIV golfer Cam Smith will also be playing in the tournament this year.
