“I was drug by the car, I went to the ground”: Scottie Scheffler’s arresting officer Bryan Gillis shares a statement online
Scottie Scheffler's arresting officer made headlines in the golf world again on Wednesday, May 29. Gillis issued a statement expressing his displeasure with what Scheffler's defender said about him.
The Jefferson County, Louisville, prosecutor's office on Wednesday dropped charges against Scottie Scheffler. After the news broke, Steve Romines, the player's attorney, gave statements to the press, among which were some strong words about the Bryan Gillis' actions.
In this regard, the official released a statement asserting the following (excerpts, via Fore Play):
"It was unfortunate and disturbing to hear Steve Romines’ commentary today claiming that a 'false arrest' was made and for him to challenge my honesty and integrity. I'd be surprised and disappointed if Mr. Schefller actually had any part in making those statements."
"To be clear I was drug by the car, I went to the ground, and I received visible injuries to my knees and wrist, I'm going to recover from it, and it will be ok. This is the extent of my commentary on the incident."
"The reality is that there are more important things in the world right now than a back-and-forth over this. A person lost his life that day, and a family lost a loved one."
During his meeting with the press, Steve Romines claimed that Scottie Scheffler had been “falsely arrested” (via WDRB's Eric Crawford), despite which the player remained calm. He also said that the police had tried to get him to confess to things he had not committed (via NUCLR GOLF).
What's next for Scottie Scheffler?
The prosecution's dropping of the charges against Scottie Scheffler came five days before his arraignment. Notably, Scheffler's arraignment hearing was scheduled for next Monday, June 3.
Wednesday's move by the prosecution closes the legal process against Scheffler, putting his schedule and exceptional season performance back in the spotlight.
Scheffler will not play in the RBC Canadian Open starting next Thursday, but is confirmed to play in the Memorial Tournament beginning June 6. A week later, he will lead the field at the US Open, the third major of the season.
Depending on the result at Pinehurst, Scheffler should play the Travelers Championship a week later, as it is the last Signature Event of the season.
The next main challenges for Scheffler will be in Europe, as the Scottish Open and The Open Championship will be played in July. Two weeks later, the Olympic event will be played, for which the World No. 1 has already announced his interest.
The season will close with the usual three events that make up the FedEx Cup playoffs (FedEx St. Jude Championship, BMW Championship and TOUR Championship). Scheffler should have no problem qualifying for all three, considering the amount of points he already has in the ranking.
