“I learned a lot from losing” – Jordan Spieth opens up about his past performances in the Masters
Jordan Spieth won the Masters in 2015. The golfer, who made his major debut in 2014, sprung onto the scene to surprise many at the event. The then 21-year-old took the Green Jacket by beating some of the game’s greats.
Eight years after his win, Spieth is once again readying himself for the prestigious event.
Recalling his past performances at Augusta National, the 29-year-old said that he learned a lot from winning as well as from losing. Having had an incredible start to his Masters career, Spieth revealed that he hopes to match some of the greats.
Speaking about his Augusta experience in his pre-Masters press conference, Jordan Spieth said, as quoted by Golf Monthly:
“Yeah, 10th appearance now feels crazy and I hopefully can match some of those greats that played in how many over the years. It would be pretty special, but at the same time when you get opportunities at a young age and you feel good about your chances, I want to win it again. That's the goal. Ten years here, a lot of experience, I can look back and say I learned a lot from winning, and I learned a lot from losing.”
He added:
“I feel better perspective now than ever, and hopefully that continues to grow. But ultimately, our sport doesn't get heightened more than it does this week. This is the highest-viewed golf tournament in the world, and I like to always call it our Super Bowl, but at the same time, that's still a game, too.”
Jordan Spieth and his poor form at the Masters
Jordan Spieth has been a strong contender for the Masters for three consecutive years since his debut.
While he made a sparkling debut in 2014, he couldn’t win it. The golfer fell short to Bubba Watson on the final day. Spieth won in 2015, only to suffer an infamous collapse in 2016, handing the Green Jacket to Danny Willett. The second-youngest Masters winner, after Tiger Woods, suffered a huge meltdown after the final round.
Spieth had four top-three finishes in his first five Masters. However, the golfer has been struggling ever since.
Shedding light on his poor run of form, Spieth revealed that he feels he could have won the 2018 Masters. The golfer played a strong round on Sunday, coming back from nine shots behind to finish just two shots short of Patrick Reed.
The PGA Tour star said:
“When I look back on the times where I've had real legitimate chances, I look at the middle two rounds of 2018, I really could have, should have won it that year. I wasn't playing great. I just had two really good rounds.”
He further added:
“I had chances in 2014 and 2016 down the stretch, and other than that, it's just been 2018 that I was nine back. 2021, I was pretty far back. I really haven't had a lot of opportunities on the back nine with how many top - like I've backdoored some of those top finishes, and I'd love to get in the mix because I feel like right now, I feel better about my game than I've felt since probably 2017.”
Jordan Spieth added that he worked hard to recapture his game. The golfer added that he is currently enjoying the journey back to form and would like to improve on it.
