"I was a little bit too optimistic"- Tiger Woods considers pushing back 2025 season amidst health concerns
Tiger Woods has one round to reverse course at The Open Championship or his 2024 season is over. The legendary golfer has previously said that this would be his last start of the season, and he's well over par and outside the cut range as of now. If he doesn't embark on a miraculous comeback, he will not get to play at the weekend.
A reporter asked Woods after the first round about his 2025 plans, and he admitted that he might have to change his schedule. Woods said (via ASAP Sports):
"I thought I could play a little bit more earlier in the year. I think I was a little bit too optimistic. I need to do a lot more work in the gym and keep progressing like we have."
As for his actual health, the 82-time PGA Tour winner said that he's feeling physically better than he was at the beginning of the year. He admitted that it is tough not to play all the time.
"I just wish I could have played a little bit more, but I've been saving it for the majors just in case I do something pretty major and then take myself out of it."
He remains hopeful that next year will be a little better than 2024 has been. As for what the 48-year-old will do when 2025 arrives, it remains to be seen, but he is mulling over his options.
Tiger Woods addresses Open Championship struggles
A lot of golfers are struggling at the Open Championship. Tiger Woods, though he is in 140th place, is not alone in that. Rickie Fowler, Bryson DeChambeau, Rory McIlroy, and others are down the leaderboard as well.
Reporters asked Woods what he could take away from his opening round, in which he shot eight over:
"I didn't do a whole lot of things right today. I made that putt on the 3rd hole, and then I think I had, what, three three-putts today. I didn't hit my irons very close, and I didn't give myself a whole lot of looks today. I need to shoot something in the mid-60s tomorrow to get something going on the weekend."
Woods is optimistic that he can turn it around on Friday, but he would need to jump about 70 positions to make the cut. That would certainly require an impressive outing, something in the mid-60s, as he alluded to.
