"I'm capable of winning"- Tyrrell Hatton aims for third victory at Alfred Dunhill Links Championship after creating history
Following his 54-hole lead at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, Tyrrell Hatton is optimistic about winning the event for the third time. He added that he was excited to play the Sunday finale with his dad for the first time.
On Saturday, October 5, Hatton fired an 11-under 61 to reach 22-under, making a significant 8-spot jump to the top of the leaderboard. He sank nine birdies and one eagle on Day 3 and has a strong chance to win the tournament for the third time in his career. Additionally, he holds a three-stroke lead in the team event alongside his father, Jeff Hatton.
During the post-round interview, Hatton reflected on his chances of winning both the team and individual events at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
"That's what you hope for at the start of the week," he said. "This is the third time I've played with my dad in this event. We had not made the cut until now in the team event. I'm sure he's excited for tomorrow, although a bit scared, and he'll be pretty tired, I'm sure.
"Four rounds of golf in four days is a lot of work, especially for my dad. So yeah, it will be fun. I'm excited to give it my best. I know I'm capable of winning around here, and ultimately, yeah, just I'll try my best each time and see how we go," he added.
The LIV Golf star started his round with three birdies and an eagle from Hole 3 to Hole 8. On the back nine, he added four birdies from Holes 12 to 15 before adding two more on the final two holes. With this, he equaled the course record at the Old Course, joining Ross Fisher.
Reflecting on his round, Tyrrell Hatton said he was trying to take each hole one at a time and pick up as many birdies as he could.
"I knew when I holed that putt on 17, I had actually shot 10-under here before," he continued. "I can't remember if it was 2016, the year that I won."
"So yeah, I really wanted to birdie the last. That's actually my lowest round on tour, as well. Felt like I was trying harder than I normally would for a putt on the last. Good putt and thankfully it went in. It was a cool day," he added.
