"I didn't do a whole lot right"- Tiger Woods reflects on his poor start to the 2024 Open Championship
Tiger Woods is off to a rough start at the 2024 Open Championship. As we near the end of the first round, Woods finds himself at the foot of the leaderboard, tied for 140th. He scored a +8 at the Royal Troon Golf Club today, a less-than-ideal start for the 15x major champion.
The conditions at Royal Troon prevented many golfers from carding good scores. The likes of Rory McIlroy (+7) and Rickie Fowler (+8) also failed to finish the day on a high note.
Reflecting on his first round performance at The Open Championship, Tiger Woods did not seem too pleased. He said (via Asap Sports):
"I didn't do a whole lot of things right today. I made that putt on the 3rd hole, and then I think I had, what, three 3-putts today. I didn't hit my irons very close, and I didn't give myself a whole lot of looks today. I need to shoot something in the mid-60s tomorrow to get something going on the weekend."
Woods carded two double bogeys, six bogeys, and just two birdies during round 1 of The Open.
Tiger Woods hits back at Colin Montgomerie after retirement comments surface ahead of 2024 Open Championship
Recently, Scottish golfer Colin Montgomerie suggested that it was time for Tiger Woods to retire. Montgomerie pointed out that Woods did not seem to be enjoying himself while on course anymore, and maybe the Open Championship should be the last tournament he plays. He said via Sports Illustrated:
"At Pinehurst he did not seem to enjoy a single shot and you think, 'What the hell is he doing?’ He’s coming to Troon and he won’t enjoy it there either. There is a time for all sportsmen to say goodbye but it’s very difficult to tell Tiger it’s time to go. Obviously, he still feels he can win. We are more realistic."
Ahead of the Open, Tiger Woods had a sharp response for Montgomerie. Woods maintained his stance and said that he would be the one to decide when he retires, not Montgomerie. Woods said at the press conference (via the Guardian):
"Well, as a past [Open] champion, I’m exempt until I’m 60. Colin’s not. He’s not a past champion, so he’s not exempt. So he doesn’t get the opportunity to make that decision. I do."
Despite being confident in his abilities to play well, Woods found himself struggling in the first round of The Open Championship. The Royal Troon Golf Course was not an easy one for golfers to navigate, and Woods will hope that conditions ease up ahead of the second round.
