“It's surreal. This moment is very special"- Nico Echavarria on Zozo Championship 2024 win
Nico Echavarria said his victory at the Zozo Championship was "very special." It was his second win on the PGA Tour, and following his victory, the 30-year-old said (via PGA Tour),
“It's surreal. This moment is very special."
The tournament came down to the final hole between Justin Thomas, Max Greyserman, and Nico Echavarria. On the 16th, Echavarria shot a birdie, while Thomas made par on the 16th and also on the 17th.
However, the two-time major winner holed in a birdie on the 18th, putting him level with Echavarria again. However, the Colombian golfer also made a birdie on the final hole, which ultimately gave him a one-stroke lead for victory at the event.
Meanwhile, Geyserman also had a good start on the front nine of the final round with four birdies and he was level with Echavarria until the final hole. However, he could only make a single birdie on the back nine and finished one stroke behind the winner.
Following his win, Echavarria shared his thoughts on his competitors, saying,
"It was very close all day, it was fun. (Thomas and Greyserman) got off to a hot start and it was very level during the last, I don't know, 13 holes or 10 holes. Max played great. Justin has been playing incredible, he hit a lot of good putts that didn't go in. But overall, it was special to finish birdie-par-birdie and take this home.
“It's the second win on the PGA TOUR. Not a lot of people get to win two times on the PGA TOUR. I'm just going to enjoy this as much as I can and get ready for the next one."
Thomas shot 66 in the final round and settled in second place with Greyserman, who played a final round of 65. Rickie Fowler was also impressive at the tournament, finishing in fourth place, while Kurt Kitayama finished in fifth place.
Nico Echavarria started his Zozo Championship campaign with a round of 64. He shot two back-to-back rounds of 64, followed by a third round of 65. With a final round of 67, he finally won the tournament. Having turned pro in 2017, he has won five professional tournaments so far.
