"It's very impressive": Thorbjorn Olesen proud of upcoming golfers from Denmark

Thorbjon Olesen has garnered admiration worldwide after his recent win at the Thailand Classic in Bangkok on February 19, 2023. He claimed his seventh title on the DP World Tour on Sunday where he took a two-shot lead in the final round and eventually won the title by four shots.

Olesen attained a 92nd position in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) after a win on Sunday, after his career high at the 33rd position in 2013.

The Danish pro aspires to achieve back-to-back success as he tees up in India for the Hero Indian Open, which is set to commence on February 23, 2023, at the DLF Golf and Country Club. No Dane has ever won this tournament since its inaugural tournament in 1964.

Thorbjorn Olesen feels proud of his compatriots

2021 saw a remarkable rise of Danes in the world of golf. Out of the 26 tournaments on the European Tour, Denmark had won more than a quarter of them with seven titles.

Denmark has about 149,044 golfers who play over 189 courses, according to figures from KPMG's Gold Participation Report. With these numbers, it’s impressive to see how the Danish golfers have attained seven of the 26 titles.

Olesen expressed his delight and pride when enquired about the rise of young Danish professional golfers.

“It’s unbelievable. The last three or four years there’s so many Danes coming up. The twins (Nicolai and Rasmus) have so much talent and have shown that already," said Olesen. It’s very impressive for a country like Denmark.
"It’s not ideal with the weather, only five and a half million people. But I think we’re good at really grinding it out. When you have goals and work hard for it, it pays off. It’s really impressive and something I’m proud of.”

The Thai Classic champion is referring to the Hojgaard twins hailing from Denmark, who've been subjected to recognition and admiration worldwide in the last four years. This is due to his exceptional performances at the amateur level and eventually in professional tournaments. Rasmus and Nikolai created history in 2021 when they won back-to-back on the European Tour, becoming the first pair of brothers to do so.

“In life and in your career, you sometimes stumble across people who are a bit different,” said Thomas Bjorn, a 15-time European Tour winner and a fellow countrymen. “The twins fall into that category, both of them.”
