"It's a shame Tom Kim had a bit of a mess" - Byeong Hun An claims victory on home soil at Genesis Championship after intense playoff

On Sunday, October 27, South Korean golfer Byeong Hun An claimed the 2024 Genesis Championship on home soil, beating fellow countryman Tom Kim in a thrilling playoff finish. The win in Incheon, South Korea, was his second win on the DP World Tour and his first since 2015.

Byeong Hun An entered the final round of the Genesis Championship with a joint 54-hole lead alongside Kim. Both players carded 5-under 67 to finish at 17-under. In the playoff hole, An sank a birdie on the 18th, while Kim fell short with a bogey, giving An his first win in a long time.

During the post-round interview, the 33-year-old South Korean golfer reflected on his victory.

"It's great, you know," he said. "I came in this week. I had a great season, obviously. It's been too long since I won on the main tour. All I tried to do was show some great golf in front of the home fans. Like I said, it's been a while to play in front of them.
"It feels amazing. It's a shame that Tom had a bit of a mess there, but it's been a great tournament for me. I've really enjoyed it. There were a lot of fans out there supporting both Tom and me, and I feel like we had a great battle today. I just got a little bit lucky to be the winner, I think."

Byeong Hun An experienced a slump in recent seasons, falling out of the top 300 in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). However, he made a resurgence this season with five top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour and only four missed cuts.

Earlier this year, he narrowly missed the Sony Open title in a playoff. Besides, he also made it to the International team in the Presidents Cup and earned 1.5 points for the team with a 1-1-1 win-loss-tie record.

"It's a sweet ending for this year," An added, reflecting on his season. "It's been a great year. I've put a lot of work into it. It'll be the same next week when I get back. It's going to be another offseason where I have to work hard for a better next year. This feels amazing. I'm going to enjoy it for a while, and then I've got to get back on it," he concluded.
