"Its not something we grew up knowing"- LIV Golf’s John Rahm says representing Spain at 2024 Olympics is a dream come true
Jon Rahm is at the JCB Golf and Country Club in Staffordshire, England to play at LIV Golf United Kingdom, starting on Friday, July 26. One week later, Rahm will represent Spain at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
This will be Rahm's first appearance at an Olympic event, and the matter took center stage at the pre-LIV Golf UK press conference. Rahm told the media covering the event, including Sportskeeda, that the experience promises to be "something special".
This was part of what Jon Rahm had to say:
"I'd say for a lot of golfers because it's not something we grew up knowing as a possibility. So to be a part of it, I think right now for a lot of people, it may not have the significance it will have in the future."
"But I think for all of us competing, it's arguably Walker Cup of the most impressive feats in sports, to own a gold medal and earn a gold medal is something that very few people in history can do. To be able to add to your country's medal count is something special."
Jon Rahm qualified for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, but withdrew when he caught Covid-19. His place was taken by Jorge Campillo.
At Le Golf National, Rahm will represent Spain alongside David Puig. Compatriots Carlota Ciganda and Azahara Muñoz will play at the women's event.
Jon Rahm's form going into LIV Golf United Kingdom
LIV Golf United Kingdom will be the 11th tournament of the season and Jon Rahm arrives on the shoulders of his recent top 10 finish at The 2024 Open Championship. At Royal Troon, the Spaniard finished in T7 with a score of 1-under.
Rahm did not have the same luck at the first three majors of the season, as he finished T45 at the Masters and was cut at the PGA Championship. He missed the U.S. Open due to injury.
His LIV Golf season has included nine consecutive top 10s (he withdrew from LIV Golf Houston due to injury), although he has yet to win his first tournament. He has tied for third three times, which is his best finish on the circuit to date.
Rahm has been much more successful in team competition, as his team, Legion XIII, has won three of the 10 tournaments this season. Both Rahm and the team are ranked second in the season standings.
The Spaniard shook up the golf world in December 2023 when he announced his signing with the Greg Norman-led league, which is backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF). Until then, Rahm had been one of the top stars on the PGA Tour and DP World Tour.
