Jim Furyk admits expecting to see ‘go f**k yourself’ t-shirts to celebrate his infamous Presidents Cup presser comments
Jim Furyk recently admitted that he was expecting the 'go f**k yourself' t-shirts at the Presidents Cup, mentioning that the shirts with this phrase were being sold online.
A couple of months ago, Furyk led Team USA to victory at the Presidents Cup in Montreal. Team USA won the biennial event for the 13th time, defeating the International team 18.5–11.5.
Recently, Adam Schupak of Golfweek asked Jim Furyk if he had anticipated the 'go f**k yourself' t-shirts appearing at the Presidents Cup
"I thought that was coming," Furyk said as per Golfweek. "I thought the guys were gonna come to dinner in ‘GFU’ T-shirts, because they sell them online. It was shown to me. Yeah, there’s some sort of T-shirt that has the message."
For the uninitiated, Jim Furyk had said "Go f**k yourself" to Adam Schupak during a press conference ahead of the Presidents Cup, when Schupak questioned the competitiveness of the event. Notably, the International team has won only once in the tournament's history, and Schupak suggested that it might benefit the Presidents Cup if the International team secured a victory this time.
"I said it very systematically" - Jim Furyk explains his 'Go F**k Yourself' comment during the Presidents Cup presser
During the interview, Jim Furyk explained that he used the "GFU" phrase because he was trying to buy time to answer Schupak's question.
"I truly was hoping you’d print it," he continued. "And I said it very systematically. It was like me because I thought about it. And then I thought, ‘You know, I’m gonna let it fly.'
The 54-year-old golfer revealed that his wife Tabitha was a bit nervous about his comments.
"But I thought it would work out as a good thing," he added. "I thought that I could relay the message and I could use it to relay to my team that, hey, you’re gonna feel this when you get there that everyone wants you to lose. There’s little things during the week that gave me a chip on my shoulder, trust me, that’s how those events are though."
The International Team's only win at the Presidents Cup came in 1998, with a tie in 2003. Since then, they have lost ten consecutive editions. This year, they made an effort to challenge by sweeping the Friday foursomes. However, this was their only notable performance, as they lost the other three team sessions 11–2. Despite attempting a comeback in the singles matches, they ultimately lost the session 7.5–3.5.
