Jim Furyk details decision to omit Justin Thomas from the Presidents Cup team – “I had to take the 12 guys I saw fit”
On Tuesday, September 3, Team USA Captain Jim Furyk announced his six picks for the 2024 Presidents Cup. However, this time, he omitted Justin Thomas, who has been one of the best performers in biennial events.
The 2024 Presidents Cup will be played from September 26 to 29 at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. While Furyk is leading the United States, Mike Weir of Canada is the non-playing captain for the International team. On Tuesday, both captains declared their respective six picks, completing both squads.
Following the announcement, Jim Furyk was asked about the omission of Justin Thomas, who has a stellar record in both the Presidents Cup and the Ryder Cup.
"He’s a great team room guy. He’s going to play on a ton of these teams in the future as well & one day be a captain & a great one. Tough omission, but I had to take the 12 guys I saw fit," Furyk told Golf Channel.
For the uninitiated, Justin Thomas has a 10-3-2 record in the Presidents Cup and a 17-7-4 record when including the Ryder Cup. Last year, thanks to his past performances, Zach Johnson selected Thomas for the Ryder Cup squad. However, this time, Furyk was not influenced by that and decided to pass him over.
This will be the first time since Thomas's Presidents Cup debut in 2017 that he is not part of a biennial event.
Who are the six picks of Jim Furyk for the Presidents Cup?
Jim Furyk picked Keegan Bradley, Sam Burns, Brian Harman, Max Homa, Tony Finau, and Russell Henley for the Presidents Cup. With his selection, Bradley is set to become the first active Ryder Cup captain to compete at the Presidents' Cup.
Mike Weir picked Corey Conners, Taylor Pendrith, Mackenzie Hughes, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Si Woo Kim, and Min Woo Lee for the International side.
